September 8, 2020: The NFL Season is Here

posted in: Bears | 0

Would you look at that? The NFL season is here, starting this Thursday night with the Chiefs vs the Texans; nothing like starting off with the “Trubisky Bowl” to fire up Bears fans even more about who we drafted as QB instead of Mahomes and Watson. Whatever! More importantly, the Bears are back this Sunday! Yes, THIS SUNDAY! That’s crazy, and I’m ready for it. So… let’s do a season in preview right now:

Week 1 at Detroit: WIN

Come on… if there’s any team Trubisky can beat, we know who it is. There couldn’t be a better team scheduled for the start of Mitch’s redemption tour. Lions suck, they always do, and I’d like to say how thankful I am that they are in our division. Now if Mitch comes out and shits the bed… OK, staying positive…

Week 2 vs New York Giants: WIN

If there’s a better team that could be scheduled after the Lions, other than the Lions again, I don’t know who it could be. OK, their offense should be decent, but that matches up against our strength, as usual, our D. That leaves Mitch against another crap defense; his specialty! Now if we don’t start the season 2-0… Still staying positive

Week 3 at Atlanta: WIN

So this would be the game where you may want to jump off the redemption tour, but… I don’t think there are going to be any fans indoors in Atlanta, correct? Big difference playing on the road in these circumstances, therefore, I believe, Mitch continues to do enough, the defense continues to be strong, and the Bears are 3-0 to start this season. Everybody with me?

Week 4 vs Indianapolis: LOSS

We can’t be undefeated; Mitch will not be perfect either. The big question is how short that leash really is. Will one loss trigger it? Does it have to be a horrific game? As long as the Bears have a winning record, we’re OK? This will be interesting to see play out, and no, I don’t feel bad that Mitch has to play under these conditions. Like I said, it’s his tree and he’s sitting in it. Is he still sitting in the starting QB position after this loss?

Week 5 vs Tampa Bay: WIN

Have we ever beat Tom Brady? I don’t think so. But, now he’s playing without his daddy on the sidelines. Sure, the “Tompa Bay” offense will be stacked, but… who was really most responsible for the Patriots dynasty? I think it’s 50-50; is Brady still able to contribute his 50% at this old age? Who is bringing that other 50%? The Bucs are overrated, and the Bears will show us why in this one. And yes, Mitch did start this game.

Week 6 at Carolina: WIN

There will be a game, or games, where the defense will have to win one for us. This one will be won in spite of Trubisky and the offense, which even though that the Bears still won, will get people fired up again? “We can’t afford Mitch to play like this”. “He missed some many throws”. “He can’t turn the ball over in the red zone”. The whispers for Foles to take over will be there all year, and will get louder every time Mitch falters. Yet… the Bears are 5-1; hello! Let’s be happy about this.

Week 7 at Los Angeles Rams: LOSS

This is the critical juncture of the season. Mitch goes on Monday night and sucks the big one, his 2nd bad game in a row, this time vs a very bad defense. And yes, Leonard Floyd had a big game. Yes, the Bears are still 5-2 and in very good shape, but… when will we dust off BD Foles and let him swing it around? Decision time for Nagy, Pace… point to the record, point to the record…

Week 8 vs New Orleans: WIN

In a rematch from last year’s game, where Trubisky made his first start coming off an injury, and Nagy had him pass the ball 50+ times, the offense finally starts to look good. A combination of passing and running, including some big Mitch scrambles, gets the Bears a W and quiets the noise that had been ongoing all week about replacing Mitch. Trubisky is our starting QB… for now.

Week 9 at Tennessee: LOSS

Welp, that didn’t last long. In the first quarter, Mitch gets drilled… and has to come out of the game. Enter Nick Foles. He plays decent, but the Bears still lose on the road. So many questions after the game, but the initial word, will be Foles will be the starter next week; Trubisky is ruled out. Drama baby…

Week 10 vs Minnesota: LOSS

Yeah, I know, the Vikings have been our bitch too, but not in this one. Foles doesn’t play bad, but the Vikings do enough to win a close game at Soldier Field… without fans remember. How much does home field advantage really mean this year? Not much.

Week 11 BYE

Whew… what a 10 weeks. Bears sit at 6-4. Mitch gets another week to recover from his injury. Should he be starting? Do the Bears play it safe and “rest him” another week. Lots of chatter on sports radio both locally and nationally in the 2 weeks between the next Bears game, which will be against… oh yeah.

Week 12 at Green Bay: WIN

Mitch returns and the Bears beat the Packers. Have the scales finally tilted in Mitch’s favor? Beating the Packers in Lambeau coming off an injury on a Sunday night national TV tilt… Can you imagine? Shit, I’m good; beating the Packers is always a good thing. And if the Bears are winning, I’m good with sticking with whoever is at QB. Trubisky it is!

Week 13 vs Detroit: WIN

And then he gets this puppy after a huge win? Oh yeah, the Mitch snowball is rolling down the hill with a lot of speed now. It doesn’t hurt that the defense has returned more to 2018 form, and has taken some of the scoring load away from the offense’s plate. At 8-4, with some serious mojo, are the Bears heading back to the postseason?

Week 14 vs Houston: WIN

So now, Mitch is confident, and now, he must face one of his “ghosts” in Watson. Maybe this one gets flexed depending on how the Texans are doing. Again, there couldn’t be a better time for this game, with Mitch’s confidence sky high. Bears win again dammit!

Week 15 at Minnesota: LOSS

Why can’t we beat the Vikings this year? We’ve owned them. Well, the Vikings and Bears battle atop the NFC North, and with the Vikings owning the head to head, the Bears may be shooting for a wild card at this point, even with a 9-5 record.

Week 16 at Jacksonville: WIN

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Jaguars for being on our schedule. An absolute blowout ensues, setting up the season finale against…

Week 17 vs Green Bay: LOSS

Of course, just when we’ve regained the mojo, just when we’re feeling pretty good about Mitch, he turns in a dud, and the Packers beat us, in what is a meaningless game for them. It did mean something to us… at 10-6 the Bears don’t win the division, but DO make the Wild Card. But with Mitch’s last performance fresh in our head, and a one and done scenario ahead of us, will Foles be “warming up in the bullpen” in the first half of our playoff game? Or is it truly do or die for Mitch as a Bear on Wild Card weekend?

As if any Bears season isn’t a roller coaster, as if the NFL isn’t a whiplash week to week league where you’re either winning the Super Bowl or you suck, you better buckle up for some crazy shit this year. At any point, things can flip upside down, and that’s OK, as long as when the Bears land, they land back in the playoffs. And once you’re in… Bear TF Down baby!!!!
